Moreton Island, its island landscape and beaches
Moreton Island brings sandy shores, shipwreck snorkeling and inland dunes into the same island visit. Known as Mulgumpin, it is Country of the Quandamooka People, whose connection with land and sea continues today. Much of the island lies within Gheebulum Kunungai (Moreton Island) National Park and the recreation area, jointly managed by Traditional Owners and the Queensland parks service. The surrounding waters belong to Moreton Bay Marine Park.
The useful starting point is your preferred activity. A guided combination day joins island transport with equipment and lunch; a boat outing concentrates on the water; a day pass leaves more of the activity planning to you. Beach time can fit around these choices, but a boat crossing and a place on an activity are different parts of the visit.

Island days to consider
For a guided island day choose the 4WD combination; the activity pass suits independent equipment hire. A guided snorkel, beach cruise, sand safari and quad ride offer different focuses.

Choose the activity before the crossing
For an overview of the choices, start with Moreton Island tours. The guided island combination includes a 4WD experience, snorkeling equipment and a kayak, with beach wraps for lunch. The equipment day pass instead includes return ferry travel and a choice of kayak or stand-up paddleboard session, plus snorkeling equipment hire. The guided wreck-snorkeling day combines return boat travel with a supervised activity and a lunch voucher.
Other ways to shape the day include the Rivergate snorkeling cruise with lunch and wildlife spotting, the desert safari with sand tobogganing, and the guided quad activity through beach and bushland. These are different programmes rather than stops on a single island circuit. Use the activity pages to follow the experience that interests you instead of trying to fit every landscape into one day.
Plan your mainland start and island access
Book around the actual departure point. The vehicle ferry leaves from Port of Brisbane and lands on the west-side beach near Middle Road and The Wrecks. The passenger ferry uses Holt Street in Pinkenba and arrives at a jetty. Excursion boats also use Rivergate and Newport. Read getting there for the mainland leg and ferry information for the distinction between terminals.
Independent vehicle travel needs a suitable high-clearance 4WD with low-range gearing and a vehicle access permit arranged before entry. Beach routes depend on tides, signs and local restrictions. An ordinary rental booking is not enough preparation: check permission for sand travel, the ferry and recovery in the rental contract. Camping needs its own advance booking; match your arrival point to your island base and supplies.
Sand hills, sea conditions and a longer stay
The Desert is a sandblow with a walking approach and sand-tobogganing activity. Cape Moreton offers a walk to the lighthouse base and coastal views; North Point is the setting for Champagne Pools. These places help explain the islandβs variety, without implying that each excursion visits them. Leave plants, marine life and cultural resources undisturbed, and keep vehicles on permitted routes.
Water planning matters as much as the scenery. Safety information reviewed on 5 November 2026 highlights strong tidal currents and sharp, rusty metal at the wrecks. Beaches are generally unpatrolled, apart from limited coverage at The Wrecks during summer and Easter school breaks. Use local signs, swim with a buddy and carry sun protection and drinking water. Read the weather and visiting-season guide when choosing an activity.
For more time ashore, compare island accommodation areas by access and facilities. Mobile reception can be poor at particular camping locations, so keep essential travel details available offline. If your Queensland route continues beyond Moreton Bay, Plan a separate visit to K'gari. Treat that island as a separate journey with its own transport and access arrangements.

Questions before visiting Moreton Island
Should I choose a tour or arrange my own visit?
A guided outing suits a day built around included activities and organised transport. Independent travel suits plans with a separate ferry booking, suitable island transport and any required permits. Start with the activity you want to do.
Is a day pass the same as guided snorkeling?
The equipment day pass includes hire sessions. The guided snorkeling day includes a supervised wreck activity. Compare the programme rather than treating access to equipment as a guide service.
Is this a government or resort website?
This is an independent visitor guide. It is not affiliated with the park authorities, a resort or an excursion operator. Access rights and activity inclusions come from your chosen booking.
